An earthquake in Virginia measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale was felt all up and down the eastern seaboard today according to the United States Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center. It was felt all throughout our area.
Earthquakes in the United States are not covered under standard homeowners or business insurance policies. Coverage is usually available for earthquake damage by endorsement to a home or business insurance policy.
However, your homeowners and business policies may have coverage due to fire following a quake. These losses could involve claims for business interruption and additional living expenses as well.
Cars and other vehicles are covered for earthquake damage under the comprehensive part of the auto insurance policy.
For more information on how to protect yourself from earthquakes before, during and after an earthquake, see FEMA.gov for more information.
